This week I had the opportunity to sample Super Espresso made by Kitu. Kitu was developed by student entrepreneur, Jordan DeCicco, from Philadelphia University. He started the organic coffee energy drink Sunniva and was awarded a $100,000 grant from Peter Thiel’s fellowship program. Sunniva was later re-branded into Kitu which now makes the famous Super Coffee. Their newest product is Super Espresso and I was excited to try it.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to do this review. The company didn’t send me any product to sample nor was it an agenda item. Instead, I was at my local Target and saw that the Kitu Super Espresso was for sale. Being in the mood for coffee at the moment, I decided to give it a shot!
Ingredients
The Ingredients aren’t bad at all:
- Whey Protein Concentrate
- Monk Fruit
- Potassium Phosphate
- L-Theanine
- Natural Flavor
- Gellan Gum
- Green Coffee Extract
And in case you’re wondering – Gellan Gum is an insoluble fiber which is used as a thickener and potassium phosphate is just used to help prevent coagulation and increase shelf life due to it being a salt.
The Macros
The macros on this are also pretty good.
1 can of Super Espresso equates to just 40 calories, 3g fat, under 1g carb, and 5g protein. A 6oz espresso gives you 180mg of caffeine. For those people looking for a keto-friendly coffee drink but something a bit lighter than a bulletproof coffee which can get pretty high calorically, this is a good fit.
Taste
Taste wise, I enjoyed both the vanilla and the caramel. They’re both incredibly sweet and the L-Theanine, combined with the combined caffeine and fat combination make for a nice smooth caffeine buzz without any crash. The only downside to the drink is that they are a tad bit too sweet for my taste personally. However, if you like sweet coffee, this will surely be a hit.
Overall Score
I give the drink an overall 7.5 out of 10. Clean ingredients, good flavor, and just a tad bit too sweet and after-tasty for me. Overall, I’d buy again and think it’s worth a try if you’re in the market for a keto-friendly flavored coffee without the heaviness of a bulletproof coffee.
